Construction Container Rental in Quebec: A Complete Guide

Written by Conteneurs Experts | 26 oct. 2026, 20:56:39

Your tools are lying around in a trailer that doesn't lock. Materials arrive before the site is ready. And the construction site looks different every week. Renting a shipping container solves many of these challenges—as long as you plan ahead. Here’s everything you need to know before booking, from container size to delivery day.

Why Rent a Container for a Construction Site?

A shipping container provides a lockable, steel storage space that can be delivered directly to the job site. It protects tools and materials from theft and the elements, without tying up your capital as a purchase would.

Renting is particularly well-suited for temporary needs: the duration of a project, a phase of construction, or a season. Once the project is complete, the container is picked up.

What size container should you rent for a construction site?

Conteneurs Experts offers 10-, 20-, and 40-foot containers for rent.

  • 10 feet: for tight urban sites or a small volume of tools.
  • 20 feet: the most popular size. It measures 20 feet long by 8 feet wide on the outside, and offers approximately 19 feet by 7 feet on the inside, or about 133 sq. ft. (12.4 m²). It is suitable for most residential and commercial construction sites.
  • 40 feet: for large projects or to consolidate storage for multiple trades.

How long can you rent a container?

The minimum rental period is 4 weeks. The agreement is open-ended: there is no fixed end date, and billing occurs every 28 days. You can keep the container for as long as the job site requires.

How does container delivery to a construction site work?

For containers in stock, delivery typically takes 48 to 72 hours in the Greater Montreal area. The container arrives on a truck with a tilting platform. The truck backs up, tilts its platform, and gently slides the container onto the ground. This method requires no additional lifting equipment on your site.

To ensure delivery goes smoothly the first time, check these five points:

  1. Clearance: You’ll need about 65 feet of clear space in a straight line to unload a 20-foot container, and about 110 feet for a 40-foot container.
  2. Door orientation: Let us know if the doors should face the truck’s cab or the rear. Only you know your layout.
  3. Ground surface: A relatively level surface free of debris. In winter, clear snow from the site.
  4. Supports: Place blocks or chocks under the corners to raise the container off the ground. This allows air to circulate, prevents the container from sitting in water, and protects the surface beneath it.
  5. Leveling: A level container ensures that the doors open and close properly.

Please allow at least 48 hours’ notice for both delivery and pickup.

How do you secure a rented container on a construction site?

Rental containers are equipped with protective lock boxes. The padlock is housed in a metal box, making it very difficult to cut or force open, unlike a standard padlock attached directly to the locking bar. High-security locks are also available upon request.

Once delivered, the container is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to you and your teams.

What accessories can be added to a rental container?

A rental container cannot be modified, but several removable accessories make it much more practical:

  • Shelf brackets: These attach to hooks located at the top of the walls, approximately every 4 feet. You can place boards on them to create shelving, then remove them when the container is returned.
  • Magnetic lights: They attach anywhere on the steel. The wire runs through the door seal without compromising its waterproofing.
  • Padlocks for protective enclosures: designed for the enclosures on our containers.
  • Leveling boards: ideal for temporary installations or containers that will need to be moved.

Ask your representative to add the accessories to your reservation. See all our container accessories.

Do you need a permit to install a container on a construction site?

It depends on the municipality. Requirements vary from one location to another, especially for long-term installations. Check with your municipality’s planning department before delivery.

To help you, Conteneurs Experts provides its rental customers with a municipal regulations tool that helps identify the rules applicable in your municipality. Ask your representative for it.
